Winters in Northeast Wisconsin are rough on equipment.

After 5–6 months of:

  • Freezing temps
  • Moisture swings
  • Sitting unused

…it’s very common for mowers to:

  • Not start
  • Run rough
  • Cut poorly

The biggest culprit?

👉 Old fuel

Gas can break down in as little as 30 days — and ethanol-blended fuel (what most stations use) makes things worse.

Quick Pre-Season Mower Checklist

If you do nothing else, do these before your first mow:

  • Change the oil
  • Replace or clean the air filter
  • Sharpen the blade
  • Replace the spark plug
  • Add fresh fuel (or drain old gas)

This alone solves most spring startup issues.

Push Mower Maintenance (Simple + Fast)

Change the Oil

  • Do this once per season
  • Most mowers use SAE 30 or 10W-30
  • Warm the engine first so oil drains easier

Replace the Air Filter

  • Cheap and often overlooked
  • Dirty filter = poor performance

Types:

  • Paper → replace
  • Foam → wash, dry, lightly oil

Sharpen the Blade

This is the #1 thing affecting how your lawn looks.

  • Dull blades tear grass → brown tips
  • Sharp blades = clean, healthy cut

Aim for at least once per season

Replace the Spark Plug

  • Costs a few bucks
  • Prevents hard starts and rough running

Quick win.

Clean Under the Deck

  • Built-up grass blocks airflow
  • Reduces cut quality

Scrape it clean at:

  • Start of season
  • End of season

Riding Mower Maintenance (Same Ideas, Bigger Scale)

If you’ve got a rider, add these:

  • Change oil and oil filter
  • Check battery (common failure after winter)
  • Inspect belts and tires
  • Sharpen all blades (usually 2–3)
  • Grease fittings if applicable

The Fuel Problem (Big in Wisconsin)

Most gas in the area is E10 (10% ethanol).

Issues:

  • Absorbs moisture
  • Causes buildup in carburetors
  • Leads to hard starting

What to do:

At season start:

  • Use fresh gas
  • Don’t mix old + new fuel

During season:

  • Don’t let gas sit too long

End of season (most important):

  • Run mower dry OR
  • Add fuel stabilizer before storage

When to Call a Professional

Some issues aren’t worth fighting yourself.

Consider a repair shop if you have:

  • Persistent starting issues
  • Smoke from the engine
  • Loss of power
  • Suspected bent blade or crankshaft

Or… Skip All of This

Let’s be honest — not everyone wants to spend their weekend doing mower maintenance.

And honestly?

That’s kind of the point.

Instead of:

  • Tuning engines
  • Sharpening blades
  • Troubleshooting fuel issues

You could just have it handled.

At True North Lawns, we take care of:

  • Consistent mowing
  • Proper cutting height
  • Seasonal timing
